KUMHO isn’t exactly a household name. In fact I only first heard of them a couple years ago. I was researching off-road truck tires for my Jeep Cherokee when I remembered all the favorable reviews and ridiculously low prices associated with these discount tires.
Kumho Tires, a South Korean company, has been around since 1960 and has joined the ranks as one of the top ten tire manufacturers in the world. The KUMHO brand is manufactured in South Korea and in China with R&D centers in the UK and USA.
KUMHO Off-Road Maximum Traction
KUMHO offers two Maximum Traction tires, the more conventional Road Venture MT 834 and the unusual looking Road Venture MT KL71.
The Road Venture KL71 – is an Off-Road Maximum Traction light truck tire offered in 18, 20, 22 and 24-inch rim sizes. Intended for Jeeps, Pickup trucks and Sport Utility vehicles.
The Road Venture MT KL71 is a very low profile and expensive tire with some pretty radical sidewalls and tread patterns. Prices start from the mid $200’s to over $400 each.
The Road Venture MT 834 – is an Off-Road Maximum Traction light truck tire designed to provide off-road traction first and highway manners second. The Road Venture MT 834 was developed to meet the needs of pickup truck and sport utility vehicle drivers, and off-road racers.
The Kumho Tires Road Venture MT 834 comes in limited 14-inch, as well as the standard 15 and 16-inch tire sizes. Prices range from just under, to slightly above $100 each.
KUMHO On/Off-Road All-Terrain
Venture AT 825 – is an Off-Road All-Terrain light truck tire that leans more toward the all-purpose tire category. Primarily intended for drivers of light trucks and SUV’s who spend most of the time on pavement, who desire a smooth riding, long lasting tire.
The AT 825… KUMHO’s most popular AT-tire, will handle light/medium off road duties where All-Terrain tire strength and traction is occasionally needed. Tire sizes range from 15 to 17-inchs and prices run from $60 to $90.
The AT 825’s tread design, in my opinion, is really better suited for wet and dry pavement, snow and icy conditions. I still wouldn’t be afraid to do some serious off-road driving occasionally.
The Venture KL 41 and KL 78 – Are basically the same tire, I can’t tell the difference by just looking at them. The tread pattern and general appearance are identical. These tires have a more aggressive tread design than the AT 825.
The main difference in the two Kumho Tires seems to be tire and rim sizes offered. The KL 78 seems to cater to the newer light trucks and SUVs with larger wheels from 15 to 18 inches, 20 and 22-inch wheels are offered too, while the KL 41 is only offered in 15 and 16 inch sizes.
MY REVIEW of the KUMHO KL 41
When it came time to choose new tires for my 4×4 truck, I came up with the idea to switch the half used Bridgestone REVOS from my Jeep Cherokee, to the less driven truck and purchase new tires for the Jeep Cherokee instead.
Tire Shop or TIRE RACK?
I have always purchased my tires from one of the name brand tire shops complete with road hazard, free rotate/balance, flat repair etc. The only problem is, you have to keep going back to the same outfit for service and you pay a premium for the tires.
Most of my driving is to and from work, on mostly dry pavement. Here in Northern Nevada, we do get snow, ice and wet conditions too! On weekends, I use the Cherokee to go off road, hunting and fishing etc. Our jeep trails offer a variety of rocks, sand, mud and snow.
I needed a good all-around tire at a reasonable price. Only one tire matched my needs, the KUMHO KL-41. I had heard nothing but good reports about Kumho Tires from friends and read favorable reviews, so I decided to give them a try.
I spoke to the local tire shops that either didn’t carry KUMHOs or wanted too much money. So I went online and bought 5 tires from the TIRE RACK, a pleasant experience. They will ship to your address too.
I paid $74.00 each, plus tax, picked them up from the Reno warehouse, took them to a local tire shop and had them mounted, balanced with new stems for under $50.00. I have to admit I was a little skeptical of the quality of such inexpensive tires.
On and Off-Road Testing
As I drove away from the tire shop, I immediately noticed the superb steering and response offered by these tires. Driving down the highway, the noise level was barely noticeable and the ride was absolutely smooth! They do tend to be a little sensitive to uneven road conditions.
I drove up to Lake Tahoe on Kingsbury Grade to test handling. It felt like I was driving a sports car, no tire lean at all. I also had the opportunity to drive in snow and ice a few times both on and off the road with excellent results! Hydroplaning resistance is good too.
Off-road, traction wise, these Kumho Tires perform as well as any All-Terrain tire I’ve owned, and appear well suited for light to moderate off-road action. I have bounced the sidewalls off jagged rocks and driven over many rocks and other sharp objects without incident.
Coupled with my Bilstein shocks, these Kumho Tires offer a very comfortable and stable off-road ride. I only have 4,000 miles on them so far and have noticed no unusual wear to date. I will update this article in the months to come as I put more miles on the KL 41’s.
In my opinion, considering what you get for what you pay, there is not a better value to be had in an All-Terrain tire than the KHUMO KL-41 and KL-78. These Kumho Tires excel at covering a broad range of driving conditions while easy on the pocketbook.
Well in 2010 at a little over 40,000 miles on my Kumho’s, I put the best tire in the spare position and bought 4 more KL 41’s from the Tire Rack and had WalMart mount and balance them. I sold the four older tires to a used tire outfit for $80, not bad!
